AERODYNAMICS DEPARTMENT

The department of Aerodynamics is focused on estimating the aerodynamic forces that allow the plane to fly and manoeuvre. The effective responsibilities of the department are split in in two distinct phases: during the concept phase it leads, together with the Flight Mechanics Department, the early designs of both the wing and the control surfaces, while during the later stages of development it uses numerical tools to compute the loads experienced by the aircraft in flight.

The two phases are also separated in terms of the tools used, taking advantage of simpler software for the former (XFLR5, DUST), while the latter mainly employs Ansys Fluent CFD software. Dassault Solidworks is used to adapt CAD geometries for aerodynamic purposes.

No theoretical notions are directly used, but a general understanding of aerodynamic concepts is essential for a critical analysis of the results, while specific knowledge about the software used is not strictly required.

For future applicants:

  • 1st to 3rd year: decent understanding of the basic principles of aerodynamics, basic modelling capabilities in Solidworks

  • 4th year: excellent understanding of aerodynamics, basic modelling capabilities in Solidworks, basic understanding of Python or MATLAB

ELECTRONICS AND PROPULSION DEPARTMENT

The department is in charge of choosing and arranging the on-board electronics and sensors, designing the moving surfaces, and determining the engine and cooling system of our fixed-wing drones. The main areas of research concern flight controllers, radio protocols, the implementation of autonomous driving and the development of acquisition systems for bench and wind tunnel tests.

For future applicants:

  • Basic knowledge of brushless motors and its components
  • Basic knowledge of LiPo batteries and their testing
  • Experience in soldering and electronics assembly
  • Experience in model aircraft or drones and their components
  • Knowledge of CAD software and MATLAB

MARKETING DEPARTMENT

The MKTG department handles relationship management with partner companies with the goal of networking with companies that decide to support the project. In particular, it has a key procurement and purchasing role in making sure that the team always has what it needs available. Also within the department are social profile and event management functions, both of which are crucial to allowing as many people as possible to connect with Fly Mi.

For future applicants:

Regardless of the year or course of study, excellent communication skills, a strong motivation to take action and get involved, as well as the ability to be versatile and adaptable are essential.

FLIGHT MECHANICS DEPARTMENT

The department handles aircraft design from conceptual design through preliminary design, concluding with performance analysis. So the department must continually interface with all others for decisions regarding different aspects of the aircraft, from airfoils to construction methods to the servos used.

For future applicants:

To work in the department, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the Matlab environment, since the work is mainly done on that software, and above all, a desire to go deeper and get involved by proposing new ideas and alternative solutions to the problems encountered.

STRUCTURES DEPARTMENT

The structures department is responsible for making CAD models of the aircraft,
for choosing materials and designing the structure by verifying that it withstands the loads of the flight mission. The department uses innovative technologies and materials peculiar to aerospace, such as composites and 3D printing, interfaces with others to receive constraints regarding mass distribution, geometry of load-bearing and nonload-bearing bodies, and position of servo actuators and wiring harnesses. It is the department closest to production and assembly, steps that often involve the participation of its members.

For future applicants:

  • 1st/2nd/3rd year: good/excellent knowledge of SOLIDWORKS, or other 3D design programs such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidEdge. However, the program used will still be SOLIDWORKS. Basics of carbon functionality and usage, manufacturing, lamination process. Il programma utilizzato sarà comunque SOLIDWORKS. Basi su funzionalità e utilizzo del carbonio, lavorazione, percorso di laminazione.
  • 4th/5th year: good/excellent knowledge of SOLIDWORKS, good/excellent knowledge of the structural field, with specific appreciation if you already have knowledge of using ABAQUS or other similar programs.

However, what makes the most difference is your personal background: having already worked on aircraft models, participated in aeromodelling competitions, or having good knowledge of mechanical transmissions will have significant weight in the candidate selection process.
